Crafting Effective Prompts for Microsoft 365 Copilot
Master the Goal + Context + Expectations + Source framework to write prompts that get better results from Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Lab overview
Microsoft 365 Copilot can draft documents, analyze data, and build presentations - but the quality of its output depends entirely on the quality of your prompt. A vague one-liner produces generic results; a structured prompt with clear goals, context, expectations, and sources produces content you can actually use.
In this guided lab, you will learn and practice Microsoft's official GCES (Goal + Context + Expectations + Source) prompting framework. You will start by understanding each element, then put the framework to work across three Microsoft 365 apps - drafting documents in Word, analyzing data in Excel, and generating presentations in PowerPoint. At each stage, you will compare the output of basic prompts against optimized GCES prompts so you can see the difference structured prompting makes.
Objectives
Upon completing this Intermediate level lab, you will be able to:
- Explain the four elements of Microsoft's GCES prompting framework: Goal, Context, Expectations, and Source
- Compose structured prompts that include all four GCES elements for any Microsoft 365 Copilot scenario
- Compare the output quality of basic one-line prompts versus optimized GCES prompts in Word
- Use Copilot in Word to draft and refine a professional document using structured prompts
- Apply the GCES framework to analyze data in Excel and generate presentation content in PowerPoint
