Configure Azure Monitor Alerts and Action Groups for App Service
Create metric alerts, log search alerts, and action groups to monitor an Azure App Service and respond to threshold breaches.

Lab overview
Azure Monitor provides a unified alerting platform that detects issues across cloud infrastructure and applications before they impact end users. Alerts evaluate telemetry data - platform metrics, resource logs, and activity logs - against defined conditions and trigger automated responses through action groups, enabling operations teams to maintain service reliability at scale.
In this lab, you will configure diagnostic settings on a pre-provisioned App Service to send logs to a Log Analytics workspace, create an action group with email notification channels, build a metric alert rule that monitors CPU percentage against a defined threshold, and create a KQL-based log search alert that detects HTTP server errors.
Objectives
Upon completing this intermediate level lab, you will be able to:
- Configure diagnostic settings on an App Service to stream logs to a Log Analytics workspace
- Create an action group with email and webhook notification types
- Create a metric alert rule that monitors App Service Plan CPU percentage against a static threshold
- Create a log search alert rule using a KQL query to detect HTTP 5xx errors
Who is this lab for?
This lab is designed for:
- Cloud engineers and administrators preparing for AZ-104 or AZ-500 who need hands-on experience with Azure Monitor alerting
- DevOps engineers looking to implement proactive monitoring and automated notification workflows
Verified against your live environment
An automated validation engine inspects your actual resources and configurations as you work. Completion means the task was performed — not multiple choice, real-world proficiency.
