Deploying a Linux VM with Networking using Azure PowerShell
Deploy a Linux VM with networking using Azure PowerShell. Learn cmdlets, variables, and pipelines while creating NSGs, VNets, and NICs in Cloud Shell.

Lab overview
Azure PowerShell is a command-line tool that lets you manage Azure resources using PowerShell cmdlets. It follows a verb-noun pattern (like New-AzVM or Get-AzResourceGroup) that makes commands readable and discoverable, and works with objects rather than plain text for powerful data manipulation.
In this lab, you will start by learning how Azure PowerShell itself works, finding cmdlets, reading their help, and passing objects between them with the pipeline. You will then put those techniques to work building a complete networking stack and deploying a Linux virtual machine onto it, finishing with an SSH connection to confirm the deployment.
Objectives
Upon completion of this beginner level lab, you will be able to:
- Read the verb-noun structure of Azure PowerShell cmdlets and discover new ones with
Get-CommandandGet-Help - Work with cmdlet output as objects using variables, dot notation,
Get-Member, and the pipeline - Create networking infrastructure including NSGs, VNets, subnets, public IPs, and NICs using Azure PowerShell
- Deploy a Linux virtual machine with SSH key authentication
- Verify deployments and connect to VMs using SSH
Who is this lab for?
This lab is designed for:
- IT professionals transitioning to cloud administration
- Azure certification candidates preparing for AZ-104 or AZ-900 exams
- System administrators looking to automate Azure infrastructure
- Beginners wanting hands-on experience with Azure PowerShell
Verified against your live environment
An automated validation engine inspects your actual resources and configurations as you work. Completion means the task was performed — not multiple choice, real-world proficiency.
